The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is collaborating with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR) to conduct a study in which participants will smoke THC or placebo and then drive an automobile along a test track in Sacramento. A trained law enforcement officer will subsequently evaluate them for impairment. Click HERE to learn more about the study.
Drs. Robert Fitzgerald and Thomas Marcotte recently published an article in Clinical Chemistry on cannabis and driving. They demonstrated that there was no correlation between THC concentrations in biofluids and driving performance. The study also examined the impact of adding toxicology results to field sobriety test evaluations as a way of improving the accuracy of driving under the influence determinations.

In December 2022, the bipartisan Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act sponsored by Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) was signed into US law. This legislation removes barriers for researchers studying medical marijuana and its health impacts, ensures an adequate supply of research-grade marijuana, and promotes the development of FDA-approved drugs derived from CBD and marijuana.
